As human beings, we are constantly searching for our identity. We ask ourselves, “Who am I?” “What is my purpose?” “Where do I belong?” These questions can bring a great deal of confusion and uncertainty, but as a Christian, I am here to tell you that the answer can be found in the Bible.
Who Am I: Our True Identity
First and foremost, we must understand that our identity is not found in our job title, our accomplishments, or even our relationships. Our true identity is found in who God says we are. In the book of Genesis, we read that we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This means that our identity is rooted in our relationship with Him. We are His beloved children, fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
Moreover, the Bible tells us that our true identity is found in Christ. In 2 Corinthians 5:17, it says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are transformed into a new creation. Our old identity, defined by our past mistakes and shortcomings, is replaced with a new identity in Christ. We become children of God, adopted into His family, and given a new purpose and destiny which will guide us in our who am I quest.
Meditate on His Words
So who are we in Christ? Well, the Bible tells us that we are chosen (1 Peter 2:9), loved (Romans 5:8), and set apart (Ephesians 2:10). We are also called to be ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20) and to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). Our identity in Christ is one of love, purpose, and power.
But in a world where we are bombarded with messages about who we should be, it can be difficult to hold onto our true identity in Christ. That’s why it’s important for us, as followers of Christ, to constantly remind ourselves of who we are in Him. We can do this by reading and meditating on His Word, which is a mirror that reflects who am I, our true identity (James 1:23-25).
Children of God
In addition, we must also surround ourselves with fellow believers who will encourage and speak truth into our lives. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” When we are surrounded by like-minded individuals who also know their identity in Christ, we can help one another stay grounded and focused on who we are in Him.
In conclusion, as we search for our identity, let us remember that the answer is found in the Bible. We are created in the image of God, and our true identity, i.e. who am I, is found in Christ. So let us embrace who we are in Him and live out our purpose and destiny as children of God.
